DENHAM SPRINGS, La. (WAFB) - The family of a wheelchair-bound man shot and killed by police in 2024 filed a lawsuit seeking answers about the fatal encounter that left 31-year-old Chevis Whalen dead after being shot multiple times.
Attorney Jill Craft filed the lawsuit on behalf of Whalen’s family, alleging negligence, excessive and unjustified deadly force, assault, battery, and negligent training against the Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office.
“We obtained the coroner’s report, and it appeared to be about 14 shots,” Craft said.
Whalen, who lost his leg in a motorcycle accident years before his death, was known to local law enforcement officers, according to dispatch logs obtained by Craft.
