MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Nothing irked West Virginia head coach Rich Rodriguez more than his team’s inability to convert short yardage situations last Saturday when the Mountaineers fell to TCU, 23-17.
The Mountaineers failed to convert five fourth down plays in which they needed 1 or 2 yards to maintain possession, and it played a pivotal role in the Horned Frogs racing out to a 10-0 first-quarter lead and 20-7 halftime advantage.
“You have to be able to convert the short yardage stuff. That was the most frustrating part of it,” Rodriguez said. “It’s not just o-line. It’s the play call, tight ends, running backs, everything that’s in there. To win a game like that, you have to be able to convert the short yardage stuff and we didn’t do a good job with that.”
