CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) - Pilots and passengers continue to be put in danger in the skies by laser strikes coming from people on the ground.

Even helicopters with Ohio State Highway Patrol haven’t been immune to the blinding lights.

19 Investigates obtained OSHP video of several laser strike incidents that happened this year across the state.

When it happens, pilots face a glare so bright it could cause flash blindness.

When they’re able to recover, pilots can give local police on the ground the location of the suspect and other key information that can help them make an arrest.

It is illegal to shine lasers on an aircraft.

So far this year through July, 19 Investigates found there have been 5,913 laser strikes on aircrafts nationwide reported to the FAA.

More than 80% of them happen
