MOORHEAD — Local law enforcement is reminding drivers to stay on the lookout for deer in the coming months.
North Dakota Game and Fish says now through early December is the peak time for deer and vehicle collisions.
Deer are most often seen in highly wooded areas during dawn and dusk.
Clay County Sheriff Mark Empting says drivers should avoid swerving to miss a deer. Instead, they should brake firmly, keep their hands on the wheel and brace for potential impact.
"If you do strike that deer, the best thing to do afterward is to pull over to the side of the road, as far as you can, turn on your hazard lights, and then inspect your vehicle to make sure it's drivable or if it's not drivable, then you can contact a tow company," Empting said.
