Five athletes from the Kanawha Valley’s two Mountain East Conference schools garnered at least a share of league performer of the week status on Monday.
The University of Charleston’s Matthew Frye and Caleb Barringer are MEC football co-offensive and special teams players of the week, respectively.
The Golden Eagles’ Sam Newell and Joao Silva are conference men’s soccer offensive and defensive players of the week.
West Virginia State’s Nicole Gartner Custodio is the MEC volleyball offensive player of the week.
Frye, a redshirt freshman quarterback and a Scott High product, made his first college start at Fairmont State on Saturday and led Charleston back from a 25-point first-half deficit in a 45-35 victory. He threw for 182 yards and a score and rushed for another touchdown.
