The AFL has announced it will implement a swathe of rule changes for next year, including a last disposal out of bounds rule, with the league keen to speed up the pace of play.

The league’s football boss Greg Swann, has been in consultation with all 18 clubs, players and umpires, with ballooning quarter-lengths at the forefront of a number of rule changes set to be implemented next year.

As expected, having been adopted across some state leagues and the AFLW, the AFL will implement a free kick from the last disposal out of bounds between the 50m arcs.

Umpires will also have more incentive to restart play from ball-ups without a nominated ruck present instead of waiting for them to be in position.
