SEATTLE — The family of a teen who fell to his death at Seattle’s Gas Works Park is suing the city, calling the historic structures a public nuisance, according to new documents.
In July, 15-year-old Mattheis Johnson died after falling about 50 feet from one of the structure’s platforms. He was attending an outdoor pop-up concert at the park, located on the north shore of Lake Union.
“The city’s internal squabbling is an embarrassment to this city, a slap in the face to this grieving family, and shows reckless disregard to the safety of our community,” said attorney Karen Koehler of Stritmatter Law, which is handling the case pro bono.
KING 5 reached out to the City of Seattle for comment but has not heard back.
