Premier Jacinta Allan has rejected a proposal by the state opposition that would have immediately banned face coverings at protests despite the premier having promised to introduced a similar ban more than 10 months ago.
Shadow police minister David Southwick wrote to the Victorian premier proposing to split a private members' bill so the face covering ban could be dealt with on its own.
The Allan government pledged to ban face masks at protests in December last year as part of a broader crackdown on extremism. However Labor is yet to introduce any legislation to implement the ban, and a proposal put forward by the state opposition was blocked earlier this year.
