CROSBY — The Verndale Pirates were that close.
After opening with a 25-20 first-set victory, the third-seeded Pirates built a 2-1 advantage before the top-seeded Nevis Tigers rallied to win the last two sets and capture the West Subsection 5-1A title Tuesday, Oct. 28.

“Getting that first set was huge,” Verndale head coach Dan Johnson said. “Ever since we finished the regular season with that tournament in Underwood, winning three of four matches. Our energy level was so much higher heading into the postseason.”
