More than 55,000 sign register to ‘opt out’ of organ donation after they die

New legislation means people are now assumed to agree to be donors unless they object

More than 55,000 people have formally registered their objection to being considered as organ donors when they die, new figures reveal.

Since the middle of June, new legislation means that when a person dies it can be assumed they wish to donate their organs to be offered for transplant to another patient, but they are entitled to indicate their objections.
