Allegations of abuse and misconduct against childcare workers and early educators in one state under the national spotlight have surged to nearly 1000 in a year.
The number of allegations of reportable conduct in the Victorian early childhood education sector lifted from 896 to 967 year-on-year, the Commission for Children and Young People's annual report showed.
Physical violence was the main driver, with claims spiking 24 per cent in long day care, pre-school and kindergarten, outside-school-hours care and family day care.
Sexual offence and sexual misconduct allegations within early education fell from 99 to 78 and 33 to 27 respectively.
