Police in Nkhata Bay district say they are searching for individuals who stole 23 metres of copper wire worth over K3 million from Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) transformer in the Singo and Pundu areas of the district.
Deputy police spokesperson Devoter Mithi said the person responsible for the property at the site was informed by Escom’s faults manager that the areas were experiencing a power outage because some of the utility’s equipment had been damaged.
“The matter has been reported, and investigations are currently underway to arrest the perpetrators and recover the stolen property,” she said.
Police have since appealed to members of the public to report any suspicious activities or individuals involved in the theft to help speed up investigations.
