Hurricane Melissa, already one of the strongest hurricanes in history, made landfall in Cuba on Wednesday morning as a Category 3 strength with winds at 120 miles per hour. It has now weakened to Category 2. The National Hurricane Center warned that Cuba, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic are facing dangerous flash floods and landslides. The storm is responsible for at least seven deaths as of Wednesday morning.
Behind the storm, 2.8 million Jamaicans are reeling from the strongest hurricane to ever lash the island. Melissa landed on Jamaica on Tuesday with winds at 185 miles per hour, putting it firmly in Category 5. Ahead of landfall, the National Hurricane Center issued a blunt warning for Jamaica: “THIS IS AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS AND LIFE-THREATENING SITUATION! TAKE COVER NOW!”
