KINGSTON – Ulster County Executive Jen Metzger has written to the Newark ICE field office urging the immediate release of the New Paltz resident and full-time computer science student at Bard College, who is being held in detention despite being granted a Credible Fear determination by immigration authorities.
Ali Sajad Faqirzada and his family fled their home in Afghanistan and have lived in New Paltz for more than three years.
In addition to his studies, he also works part-time in a local hospital.
Metzger has asked for him to be released while his case is being heard by immigration officials.
“It is devastating to the family. Obviously, it is horrible to be in detention; there is no reason for it,” she said.
