South Korea has been taking note of President Donald Trump’s penchant for gold.
Trump was presented with a replica of an ancient Korean gold crown as well as a gold medal representing the highest state honor by South Korean President Lee Jae Myung on Oct. 29, during the final leg of his Asia trip after Malaysia and Japan.
Soon after Trump gave a keynote address at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum at Gyeongju, the two leaders headed to the National Museum, where he was presented with the honor.
“The crown is a key artifact that represents the Silla dynasty,” Trump was told through a translator. The Silla dynasty spanned from 57 B.C.E. to 935 C.E.
The crown, which is the “largest and most extravagant” from the Silla dynasty, “represents the divine connection between the authority of the heavens and sovereignty on earth, as well as strong leadership,” a translator explained.
Trump was also awarded the Grand Order of Mugunghwa, the country's highest decoration, in recognition of Trump as a "peacemaker" on the Korean peninsula. Mugunghwa is South Korea's national flower, a pink hibiscus.
“I’d like to wear it right now,” Trump joked, looking at the medal displayed in a case.
“It’s a great honor,” he said. “We have a very great relationship and it will only continue and get stronger.”
However, no revised trade agreements were announced between the two countries, though Trump said they were "very close" to a deal.
The two allies announced a deal on July 30 under which South Korea received a reduced 15% tariff rate by agreeing to $350 billion in new investments into the United States.
"The Deal is that South Korea will give to the United States $350 Billion Dollars for Investments owned and controlled by the United States, and selected by myself, as President," Trump wrote in a Truth Social post.
On Oct. 30, Trump is set to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping before returning to Washington, DC.
