ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - Cobb County named interim police chief James D. Ferrell to the permanent position Tuesday night.

He replaces Stuart VanHoozer, who retired in April.

Surrounded by family, friends, and fellow officers, Ferrell accepted his new appointment from the Cobb County Board of Commissioners.

“I can truly say that this is the professional honor of my life,” shared Chief Ferrell.

Ferrell was born and raised in Cobb County, joining the Cobb County Police Department 29 years ago. He started as a uniform patrol officer before eventually working his way up to the top job.

“Back then, you had to wear a khaki uniform, because they wanted everyone to know you were a rookie,” smiled Ferrell.
