Two separate scams are making the rounds in Yukon—one pretending to collect donations for the Royal Canadian Legion and another claiming to be from government Motor Vehicle Services.
Joseph Mewett, president of the Whitehorse branch of the Legion, said he was ready when scammers called asking for money.
“When we prompted them like, ‘what’s the money being used for? What’s your name?’ Things like that, they wouldn’t give any of that information,” he told CBC News. Mewett said the Legion never calls individuals for donations.
“We collect our money through the poppy campaign for veterans,” he explained, adding that when they do ask businesses for support, it’s always done in person.
He reported the scam to both the RCMP and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
