Washington has joined a coalition of states that are suing the federal government over a looming lapse in federal food benefits.

Washington joins 25 other states, and D.C., in suing the Trump administration for suspending SNAP benefits during the government shutdown. The lawsuit demands for the USDA to restore food aid for 42 million Americans. Approximately 900,000 Washington residents rely on SNAP benefits.

Officials claim the agency has billions in contingency funds but is choosing not to use them.
