ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - In just three days, more than one million Georgians could lose food assistance if the government shutdown continues.

About 1 in 8 Georgians rely on the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, also known as SNAP or food stamps.

State Democratic lawmakers are calling on Gov. Brian Kemp to dip into the state’s roughly $14 billion reserve fund.

Kemp’s office told Atlanta News First last week that the governor doesn’t have the ability to unilaterally direct those funds, and they don’t think it’s possible to use state dollars to fund a federal program.
