Russia has successfully tested its new nuclear-powered underwater drone, Poseidon, which President Vladimir Putin claims is impossible to intercept. This announcement comes shortly after the successful test of the Burevestnik nuclear-powered cruise missile, marking a significant display of military capability amid ongoing tensions with the United States over the Ukraine conflict.
During a speech, Putin stated, "Yesterday, another test was conducted for another prospective system -- the unmanned underwater device 'Poseidon,' also equipped with a nuclear power unit." He emphasized that the Poseidon drone can reach unprecedented depths and speeds, asserting that its destructive power "significantly exceeds" that of Russia’s Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile.
Putin described the Poseidon as a cutting-edge autonomous vehicle, highlighting that its nuclear reactor is 100 times smaller than those used in submarines. He noted that the drone is designed to create a powerful radioactive tsunami when detonated near coastlines.
This test is the second in a week, with the first being the Burevestnik missile, which Putin had previously touted as a success. The timing of these tests coincides with US President Donald Trump’s criticism of Russia's military actions. Trump urged Putin to focus on ending the war in Ukraine, stating, "He ought to get the war ended. A war that should have taken one week is now soon in its fourth year. That's what he ought to do instead of testing missiles."
Despite the pressure from the US, the Kremlin maintains that it is acting in its national interests. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated, "Despite all our openness to establishing a dialogue with the United States, Russia is guided by our own national interests. That's how it was, that's how it is, and that's how it's going to be." The tests are seen as a clear message that Russia will not yield to Western demands regarding the Ukraine situation.
