Vintage Terrace is the rare vacation rental with a body buried in its front yard. In addition to its guests, the chic property in Carlton, Oregon, also reportedly hosts appliances with minds of their own, disembodied voices and mysterious shadows. Reporter Samantha Swindler and I braved an overnight stay at Vintage Terrace to see what materialized.
Before addressing things that go bump in the night, let’s unpack that buried body. At a mere 13 steps from Vintage Terrace’s front door, the grave is impossible to ignore.
The body in question is Peter Chimicun Smith, a farmer and blacksmith who moved his family from Missouri to Oregon Country in 1844. After shaking off the Oregon Trail dust, Smith obtained a 643-acre donation land claim that encompassed much of what is now Carlton.
