LEWISTON, Maine — The search for Lewiston’s next police chief has been narrowed to four finalists, city officials said.

Former Police Chief David St. Pierre left the department and has been nominated to serve as the U.S. marshal for Maine . Since then, the city has been working to identify his successor.

Lewiston City Administrator Bryan Kaenrath said 18 people from across the country applied for the position, but only seven met the minimum qualifications. The field has now been reduced to four candidates.

Kaenrath said the city was encouraged by community engagement at two public listening sessions held as part of the search process. Residents who attended shared that they want to see more community policing and more opportunities to build relationships between officers and residents
