The dirty deed has been done.

A short time ago, Gov. Jeff Landry supported and urged the Louisiana State Legislature to support a second, majority-Black congressional district in early 2024. That same governor this fall called the Legislature into a special session, specifically to change the dates of the 2026 closed primary elections from April to May.

Landry and all of his Republican-legislator followers got what they wanted. The state Senate voted Saturday and the state House voted Wednesday morning to move the closed party primaries from April to May. The House vote was 73-29. Only Republicans voted in favor of the change.
