DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN — A CROWN HEIGHTS MAN HAS BEEN SENTENCED TO 18 YEARS TO LIFE FOR MURDERING A FATHER who was trying to protect his teen daughter during an armed burglary attempt.

The defendant, 29-year-old Rashawn Brown of Crown Heights, was sentenced for the January 2019 murder of 43-year-old father Phillip Scarlett, whom Brown and co-defendant 33-year-old Waki Bullock shot after attacking the teen as she headed to her dad’s apartment at the Kingsborough Houses. Scarlett was able to secure the girl inside the apartment before Brown and Bullock assaulted her.

Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice John Hecht sentenced Brown on Wednesday, Oct. 29, to 15 years in prison and five years of post-release supervision, following the defendant’s guilty plea, entered on June 5, to one count of manslaught
