A key ally of President Donald Trump is turning her guns on Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, publicly accusing him of sabotaging America's chances at dominating outer space.
According to Politico Playbook, Laura Loomer, a far-right anti-Muslim activist and white nationalism sympathizer who has made multiple failed runs for Congress, particularly isn't keen on Duffy running NASA for the long term, which he is doing on a temporary basis. She supports the confirmation of tech billionaire and SpaceX astronaut Jared Isaacman, a close ally of Elon Musk who was initially dropped from consideration for the role but is now in contention again.
Isaacman's initial rescission by Trump reportedly played a huge role in Musk's public and dramatic falling out with the administration. Shortly after this, Musk furiously attacked Trump's signature tax cut megabill and threatened to launch his own political party if it passed, although since its passage, this rivalry appears to have subsided.
"I don't really have an ax to grind with Duffy," said Loomer, who has such intense influence over Trump that her word has gotten multiple people fired or withdrawn from nomination to key government roles. "I just think it's a no-brainer to have Jared Isaacman. Jared Isaacman is highly qualified ... You want to have somebody leading NASA who actually understands space."
If Isaacman isn't confirmed, Loomer added, "we are going to lose the space race to China, which we already are. But, you know, that’s what happens when you have a reality TV star and you make him the Department of Transportation secretary.”
All of this comes amid reports that Duffy has been angling to keep overseeing NASA, to the annoyance of a number of officials in the White House.
