Waterloo Region staff is recommending LRT over rapid bus, and that Phase 2 Ion run the entire route from the Fairway Station to the Ainslie Street terminal in the Galt area of Cambridge.

The region’s sustainability, infrastructure, and development committee will be asked to endorse the recommended option Nov. 4, which would then allow the region to seek funding from the provincial and federal governments for development and implementation.

The recommendation comes after an initial business case and public feedback on Engage Waterloo Region, which saw 2,500 responses and 78 per cent of respondents preferring the 17-kilometre extension of LRT from Fairway Station to downtown Cambridge. As well, 53 per cent of respondents live in Cambridge.
