ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — The local man behind a plan to get grocery money into the hands of those who might soon lose their SNAP benefits talked to News 8's Adam Chodak Wednesday about why and how he did it.

And he is stunned.

Jeff Knauss and his family put up $10,000 and a webpage for people to apply for a $150 Wegmans gift card thinking that would pretty much be the end of it.

But then, the applications started coming.

48 hours later, Jeff said there around 30,000.

Then came the generosity, Jeff set up a GoFundMe for others to contribute, and that number is now closing in on $120,000.

Obviously not enough to give everyone who applied a gift card, but enough to make a big difference.

Wegmans, he says, has partnered with him for this saying they'll keep the gift cards at their store
