Hurricane Melissa made landfall in Jamaica on Tuesday afternoon, causing devastating damage and leaving many without power or phone service.

“There is devastation widespread, and we have to be concerned about everybody on the island,” Rose Marie Tate said.

Tate said she’s heard from her family in Montego Bay and less-impacted Kingston, but is concerned about people living in parishes more affected by the storm.

“People are very concerned,” she said. “We never disconnect from our family. We live here, but we are still connected without culture and with our people.”
