NEW YORK (PIX11) -- A possible transit nightmare lies ahead as many New York City school bus companies threaten mass layoffs due to failed contract negotiations.

New York City Public Schools has contracts with 52 private bus companies, the contracts for which expire on Oct. 31.

Without a new contract, they’ll all need to lay off their staff, causing a massive transit disaster for 150,000 New York City students, according to Sean Crowley, a lawyer for many of the companies.

A spokesperson for the Department of Education told PIX11 News that 27 of the bus companies accepted emergency contracts, which will delay some of the possible layoffs.
