A Portland coffee shop that, as of Tuesday, had raised about $90,000 to help serve breakfast to people losing federal food benefits, has, a day later, raised nearly $200,000.
Heretic Coffee , 5120 S.E. 28th Ave., is a volunteer-run, nonprofit coffee shop that, less than a week ago, started soliciting donations to help with a project to feed breakfast to anyone who is losing food benefits as the government shutdown continues .
“I legitimately thought we would get a couple hundred dollars,” Heretic owner Josh White told The Oregonian Tuesday.
Heretic is just one of the many Portland businesses that have pledged to help people who lose food benefits. But its campaign has perhaps been the most successful.
By the end of the first day, White said, they had over $10,000.
