Richmond Football Club's Dion Prestia and Melbourne's Steven May have been charged by Victoria Police following a late-night altercation on Boxing Day in Sorrento, located on the Mornington Peninsula. The incident occurred after a bucks party at the Continental Hotel, leading to charges against both players.
Prestia, 33, faces a charge of recklessly causing serious injury. In a statement, he denied any involvement in the fight, asserting, "I was not involved in the fight. I was not even physically present when it apparently took place. I deny that I am guilty of these offences and will strenuously defend these charges." Richmond confirmed their support for Prestia, stating, "As with any member of the community, he is entitled to the presumption of innocence."
May, also 33, has been charged with affray but has not yet publicly commented on the situation. According to police, the brawl involved two groups of men on Point Nepean Road around 2 a.m. on December 27. Two individuals were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
The investigation included interviews with three men in May, as stated by police. Both Prestia and May are scheduled to appear in Dromana Magistrates Court on November 27. A third individual, a 26-year-old from Blairgowrie, has also been charged with affray.
Prestia has had a successful career, playing 237 AFL games and winning three premierships with Richmond. He began his career at Gold Coast in 2011 alongside May, who has played 251 games and won a premiership with Melbourne in 2021. May previously captained Gold Coast from 2017 to 2018 before joining the Demons in 2019. Both players are former teammates at Gold Coast and are now facing serious legal challenges as they prepare for their court appearances.
