Programs and services for preschool-age children, and the creation of an outdoor entertainment facility were top priorities for thousands of Santa Maria residents who responded to city surveys seeking direction for future recreation services.

The Leisure Needs Assessment , which includes the findings and was presented to the City Council Oct. 21, was conducted by national consulting firm BerryDunn , and was built around a year's worth of public meetings, pop-up outreach events and a web-based engagement tool.

The assessment will be used by the department and the Recreation and Parks Commission to guide their priorities and actions through 2030.
