Adamant that one day the Socceroos will go "very far" at the FIFA World Cup , Australia boss Tony Popovic doesn't see any reason why that can't be next year.
The Socceroos have twice reached the round of 16 but never gone further. Popovic was adamant his charges could "do something special" in North America in 2026 and give Australia a reason to back them.
"I keep saying it to the group: one day, Australia will go very far in the World Cup. And why not this group?" he said.
"Why do we have to wait in two or three World Cups when I'm sitting back watching and applauding something special from the Socceroos? Why should we have limits? Why not do it now?
"We want to give ourselves every chance of doing that. I get a sense that the fans feel that as well."
