New Delhi: The Indian government has announced that a 30 percent import duty will be imposed on yellow peas starting from November 1, 2025. The move aims to protect local farmers from the sharp decline in pulse prices caused by a surge in cheap imports from countries such as Canada and Russia.
According to the Finance Ministry, shipments of yellow peas with a bill of lading dated on or before October 31, 2025, will be exempt from the new duty. The revised import structure includes a 10 percent basic customs duty and a 20 percent agriculture infrastructure development cess, bringing the total to 30 percent.
Until now, yellow peas were allowed to be imported duty-free until March 2026 to ensure sufficient domestic supply. However, the recent flood of imports led to a drop in market price
