One of the Northern Territory's largest beef producers has failed in its bid to stop a gas company from trademarking the name of one of its cattle stations.

Tamboran Resources is seeking to register the words "Tanumbirini Station" and "Tanumbirini" as trademarks with IP Australia, the Commonwealth agency responsible for intellectual property.

Tanumbirini is one of the NT's most famous and historic stations, which has been operating since 1893.

Tamboran's subsidiary company, Sweetpea, started exploring for gas on the station in 2022.

The cattle station's current owner, Rallen Australia, has argued the application has been filed in "bad faith" following years of long-running legal disputes between the two companies.
