Former foreign minister Alexander Downer has praised Donald Trump’s landmark meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, describing it as a “cordial and quite successful” encounter, marking a reset in strained US-China relations.

Speaking to Sky News host Chris Kenny, Mr Downer said the meeting, which took place in South Korea, delivered real gains for both sides after months of escalating trade disputes and geopolitical tension.

Following the high-stakes meeting, President Trump said the meeting was "amazing" and that the pair had come to multiple agreements.

These included reducing the tarriff rate on China from 57 per cent to 47 per cent and settling rare earth and soybean trade disputes.
