A man has been slashed with a machete in a frightening attack in Melbourne's east.

A man and a woman were confronted by a group of males on Blacksmiths Way in Belgrave about 7.10pm yesterday, police said.

Footage shows the male victim approaching the group before two attackers began slinging machetes in the direction of the pair.

One offender struck the male victim with a machete before the group took off from the scene in a white BMW sedan, according to police.

The victim, a 27-year-old Ferntree Gully man, was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The offenders remain on the run.
