For anyone not naturally gifted, carving a pumpkin can be an unforgiving experience.
It seems simple enough, but one wrong cut and, all of a sudden, the toothy smile you’re trying to create turns into a big, gaping hole.
Now imagine trying to do this in limited light under 12 metres of water.
That’s precisely what a group of divers did Sunday at Welland Scuba Park, carrying on a tradition started by Dan’s Dive Shop that has been going for more than 30 years.
Matt Mandziuk, who runs the St. Catharines shop started by his father, Dan, said the underwater pumpkin carving contest adds a nautical twist to the typical Halloween pastime.
In all 14 divers working in pairs participated in the challenge with the main rule being no carving can start until they are below the surface.
