Dog owners will be asked to keep their pets on leads in bushland reserve to help efforts to control the southern suburbs’ feral fox population.

The City of Cockburn wants to encourage better behaviour in bushland reserves as part of its fox monitoring program.

This includes keeping dogs on leashes, which will be included in the city’s education for sustainability plan that is expected to be delivered by the end of the 2025-26 financial year.

A city report said the number of people who walked their dog off-lead at night and disturbed fox control activities was a “notable concern”.

During August and September, the city’s feral animal control contractor removed five foxes from Bibra Lake during patrols held at night.
