NEWBURGH – With a suspension of SNAP food stamp benefits to end in a matter of days on November 1, the City of Newburgh is the second city in the Mid-Hudson Valley to pledge funds to recipients who rely on the federal assistance.
Middletown Mayor Joseph DeStefano announced this week that that city would pledge $10,000 to provide $50 gift cards to local supermarkets.
Now, on Wednesday, Newburgh has taken the lead of Middletown and pledged $100,000 in federal Community Development Block Grant funds to provide $150 gift cards to supermarkets for those in need.
Mayor Torrance Harvey put the blame on the SNAP suspension squarely on the backs of federal lawmakers.
