AUGUSTA, Maine (WMTW) - Even before the 2025 election, Mainers are already working to collect signatures to put a citizens’ referendum on the 2026 ballot to ban transgender athletes from participating in girls and women’s sports and instead patriciate in the division that aligns with their gender assigned at birth.
This referendum is being proposed by a group called Maine Girl Dads .
This comes after a monthslong fight between Maine and the White House over the issue of transgender athletes participating in girls and women’s sports, beginning in January when President Donald Trump signed an executive order titled “Keeping Men Out Of Women’s Sports.”
Gov. Janet Mills said she would not comply with the executive order, citing the Maine Human Rights Act and her interpretation of Title I
