Inupiat whaling: 'A cultural linchpin' for Alaskan native communities

Imet two Inupiat whaling captains during my first month in Barrow, Alaska. I had arrived in early January 1997. Aside from a glow on the horizon at midday, daylong darkness still prevailed. The temperature was 30 below zero.
