In a pair of 2020 interviews, Jack Ciattarelli called for a New Jersey constitutional convention to “rewrite” the state’s 1947 constitution, saying the courts should no longer decide public policy on major issues. “I really don’t believe we can afford to allow the courts to decide our public policy anymore,” Ciattarelli said, adding that the constitution “no longer addresses what’s broken here in New Jersey.”

He argued that a new governing document should “build these things into our Constitution,” citing what he called ambiguity in the state’s current education and housing provisions. Ciattarelli presented the idea as a “democratic process” led by elected delegates rather than lawmakers, saying it would be “very exciting” for the state.
