EVANSVILLE — In early September, 1903, Evansville resident Herman Neitzel bought a train ticket to Melrose.

He never reached his destination.

Neitzel's mangled body was found near Sauk Centre. As there was no money found with him, foul play was suspected in some quarters.

But the story doesn't end there.

Several weeks later a series of articles were published which read that railroad section crews had encountered Neitzel's ghost on the tracks.

One article read, "(The) section men maintain that the unquiet spirit of the murdered man haunts the place where he met so untimely and horrible an end. They say that in the early morning or in the dusk of the fall of the evening the man's wraith may be seen walking steadily down the railroad track until he comes to the place where his dead body
