NEW YORK (WABC) -- More than half of the school bus companies that transport students have agreed to a contract extension -- leaving the other half still threatening no bus service next week.

The contracts for the buses that transport 150,000 public school students have been approved on a month-to-month emergency basis since the end of June -- the result of an ongoing dispute.

Contracts have now been extended with 27 of the 52 private bus companies.

The other half have not yet approved, and those school bus companies say if there is no deal by the end of the week, they will lay off employees when their contracts expire on Friday - almost certainly resulting some school bus service starting next week.
