Ontario’s police watchdog is investigating an incident involving a Toronto police officer who discharged a firearm during a carjacking investigation in Mississauga on Wednesday night. The event occurred around 9 p.m. at a parking garage near Tomken Road and Dundas Street East, where officers were conducting an investigation related to a carjacking that had occurred days earlier.
According to the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), two men approached a vehicle of interest, prompting officers to execute a takedown. During this operation, one man engaged in an interaction with the police, which resulted in an officer firing their weapon. The SIU reported that the man fled the scene and has not yet been located. Investigators are currently unsure if he was struck by gunfire.
One of the suspects was arrested at the scene, while the other remains at large. The SIU has been assigned to the case due to the discharge of a firearm at a person, as mandated by the Special Investigations Unit Act. The agency has deployed three investigators and two forensic investigators to examine the incident.
Toronto police confirmed that no officers were injured during the event. The SIU is urging anyone with information, photos, or video related to the incident to come forward and assist with the investigation. This incident marks the second time within a week that a Toronto police officer has discharged a firearm while on duty, as the SIU is also looking into a separate shooting that occurred during a response to an incident in North York on Saturday morning.
