President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday appointed Justice Surya Kant, the senior most judge of the Supreme Court after Chief Justice B R Gavai, as the next Chief Justice of India.

Justice Surya Kant will take oath on November 24.

Chief Justice designate, Justice Kant as CJI will have a tenure of over 14 months and serve as CJI until February 9, 2027. Justice Kant will be the 53rd Chief Justice of India.

Justice Kant was elevated to the Supreme Court on May 24, 2019. Before his elevation as judge of the Supreme Court, Justice Kant was the Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court.
