It's only been four days since LSU fired head football coach Brian Kelly, but early signs about how the search for his replacement will go seem to indicate one thing: it's going to be a clown show.
Of course it will be. What else should we have expected from a program looking to replace the king clown himself, Kelly, who started his LSU tenure by putting on a fake southern accent while succeeding another coach with a squirting flower on his chest.
On Wednesday, it was Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry's turn to put his bright red nose on display for the college football world to see, evoking the president while calling out LSU AD Scott Woodward for his missteps. "I can tell you right now Scott Woodward is not selecting the next coach. Hell, I'll let Donald Trump select it before I let him do it," Landry said while juggling a few bowling pins.
Look, I understand if people don't want the man responsible for hiring Kelly at LSU and Jimbo Fisher at Texas A&M leading the next coaching search at LSU. That much is understandable. But I'm not completely sure why the governor is poking his nose in these decisions. Doesn't he have something better to do? Not to mention, if it's not Woodward, then who?
That's where this clown-ish press conference got funnier, because Landry said the LSU Board of Supervisors would put together a selection committee to find the new coach -- but apparently somebody forgot to tell the board. "I didn't know that," board chair Scott Ballard said when informed of his new duty.
Like I said, clown show.
Why would any top coaching candidate even want to come to LSU at this point. The school doesn't have a president, the alienated Woodward doesn't seem long for the AD job and the attention-seeking governor with a political agenda is way too involved.
From the outside looking in, this should at least be hilarious to watch. It's probably less funny the closer you are.
