Most Americans oppose demolition of the White House East Wing to make way for President Donald Trump’s new ballroom, according to a new poll.
A total of 56% of Americans oppose the project, 28% approve and 16% aren’t sure what they think, according to a Washington Post-ABC News-Ipsos poll released Thursday .
Crews last week began demolishing the entire East Wing as part of the project, even though Trump said previously the existing White House building wouldn’t be touched.
The new, 90,000-square-foot ballroom will cost $300 million. It’s being paid for with private donations from U.S. businesses and individuals .
Trump has claimed the project is broadly popular, according to the Post.
“People are loving it,” the president said in remarks in Tokyo on Tuesday.
