The mayor of Titusville sent a letter to Gov. Ron DeSantis’ office on Thursday asking for rapid response funding to help dozens of families struggling after 14 inches of rain turned streets into swimming pools.

Both the American Red Cross and Brevard County government said the outcome of this storm does not meet the threshold for federal assistance. The county’s emergency management director, John Scott, explained why that does not apply under the current circumstances at Tuesday’s board meeting.

“Unfortunately, this event has caused some limited water intrusion into homes. It doesn’t initiate any kind of federal assistance or government assistance or even Red Cross assistance for recovery for that,” Red Cross volunteer Kathy Burkett said.
